Towards the end of 1992, when Prof. Borůvka was still alive and with his consent, the Otakar Borůvka Foundation was established.
“I was very excited when my former students and current colleagues and fellows, professor Neuman, docent Fuchs and docent Půža came to me in September and October 1992 with the idea to establish a foundation for the development of mathematics, which would bear my name. And yes, I think I am humble and I know my name in the title is not the most important, but the whole concept was in line with my ideals. The intention of my colleagues was carefully elaborated – to promote the development of sciences, mostly mathematical, and their application in particular. I really liked that and that was what I was advocating for – strictly individual, targeted support to talented and promising students or colleagues who, with the help of the foundation, could move mathematical sciences another step forward. It was me who was honored, not the foundation, as in the future, when I am not among my friends anymore, it would bear my name, the name of one of many mathematicians who has knowingly, and let me emphasize that again, chosen this beautiful science over everything else in his life.” (Otakar Borůvka)
In accordance with Act No. 227/1997, on Foundations and Endowment Funds, the Otakar Borůvka Foundation was transformed in 1999 to the Otakar Borůvka Company, civic association, and in accordance with Act No. 83/1990 , on Association of Citizens, it was transformed to the Otakar Borůvka Company, association in 2018.
The activities of the Otakar Borůvka Company association are focused on the fulfilment of generally beneficial goals, based on the development of sciences in general and mathematical sciences and their applications, to support young mathematical talents in particular.
Since 2006, the Otakar Borůvka Company in cooperation with the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists and the Grammar School in Uherské Hradiště have held the Workshop of Six-Member Representation Teams of the Czech and Slovak Republic for the International Mathematical Olympics, whose first ten years were funded exclusively from non-government resources acquired by the Otakar Borůvka Company from private sponsors supporting the development of young mathematical talents.
The first workshop took place in 2006 in Hluk u Uherského Hradiště, then every year in the Regional Education Centre in Uherské Hradiště.
The Otakar Borůvka Company would like to thank doc. RNDr. Jaromír Šimša, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Mathematical Olympics of UCMP, for the excellent cooperation and organization of the professional part of these workshops, whose programme has always been perfectly prepared and played an important role in the preparation of the representatives from both countries.
The Company would also like to thank doc. RNDr. Zdeněk Botek, CSc., Headmaster of the Grammar School in Uherské Hradiště, for the excellent organization of the annual Meeting of Czech and Slovak Mathematicians at the Grammar School in Uherské Hradiště, devoted to the memories of Otakar Borůvka, a graduate from the grammar school, Michal Greguš and other important mathematical personalities, as well as current professional topics.
This event is regularly supported by significant personalities from the professional and social life, including:
Dne 10. května 2023 proběhlo shromáždění členů.
V rámci shromáždění byli přijati dva noví členové: prof. RNDr. Jan Slovák a DrSc. a RNDr. Petr Kaňovský.
Zápis z jednání je přístupný pouze registrovaným členům spolku v zabezpečené části stránek (ZDE).
